Lake Texoma is an 89,000 acre man-made lake that divides Texas and Oklahoma along the Red River. It is the second largest lake in Texas and the twelfth largest man-made reservoir in the United States. There are approximately 589 miles of lakeshore, and the lake contains many beautiful islands, sandy beaches, and secluded coves. Each year millions of people will visit the Lake Texoma area. Here visitors can experience power boating, sailing, skiing, a variety of fishing, golfing and hunting.
Fishermen come for the famous Striped Bass (Stripers), which has brought the nickname of “Striper Capital of the World” to the lake because of the estimated $30 million in annual spending related to Striper fishing here. In 2004 a 121-lb. Blue Catfish was caught near Hagerman Wildlife Refuge in the southern part of the lake. Black bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, sand bass, crappie and other species flourish. Local professional fishing guides are available to direct you to the hot spots around the lake.
Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is located just outside of Pottsboro, where Canadian geese spend the entire winter. Over 316 species of wildlife have populated the Preserve since it opened in 1946. The Refuge offers plentiful places for photography, nature study and hiking. Boating, fishing and hunting are welcome in designated areas and seasons.
The area also boasts fine hotels, resorts, conference centers, marinas and golf courses. Campgrounds, quaint bed and breakfasts, and quiet lodges abound on and around the lake for some of the most breathtaking sunrises and sunsets you can imagine.
